We had a long discussion about communication today in class. I felt pretty adept at the topic, and was thrilled to revisit it. It all made sense and it was nice to apply the conversation to the visual aspects of it.
For homework yesterday (for another class) I decided to create a go veg ad. I was asked to analyze my audience, what they think of it, what I want my message to be, and how I want it to come off. I focused largely on wanting to present the information without inflicting guilt on it's viewers as is customary.
I experienced the very same thing just now. I was walking down the street at a relatively high "business person" pace (I am on Park ave right now). Behind and in front of me walked a bunch of suits. On the corner stood a young woman. Her stance was puttin gme off. She may have been smoking a cigarette, I'm not sure. But There was a definite uniqueness to the way she was standing, and I didn't pick that up as such a good thing. Well, I heard her speak to the hurried business person behind me and ask "do you have a minute for the environment?" I guess she was an "activist?" Everything about the way she stood, the was she sounded, the words she chose and the moment she spoke them at, told me "I'm such a better human being than you because I care about the environment and you don't, because you're just rushing by me."
I wanted to rush by her too. I didn't even look at her passing by.
What is it to "care about the environment?"
What is it to act on that?
At what point are we ready to act?
At what point is the world?
Abby, thank you for your comments. They made me very happy!!!
