The psychology of communicating about important issues

Ever notice how people just get so defensive when you talk about issues that are crucial? Vegetarianism, economy, sweat shops.. Etc? I have noticed that it is much easier for people to digest things when the problem is presented as the mistake of some “other” person or group etc. When it is something that is OUR fault, we shy away from hearing about it. We pretend like it’s not true. Who is this other person to tell me that I am a murder of animals?

I just had a discussion with some really good friends about the politics of shopping. Man, I hit a sore spot. It seemed okay to discuss the big issues in the world as long as it was Bush to blame, or the corporations, but no one in the group was able to accept that it is us, with our everyday actions, that are at fault.

I am at fault.

It is crucial I think to say this to ourselves, so we can look at how we can make a change in our own lives, in the now. And then, hopefully others will catch on?

Or will they?
