An art student from Poland has been crowned the European Union's official logo designer, following a competition in July to see which creative could put 'soul' into the European club.

Szmon Skrzypczak walked away from a ceremony in Brussels with the grand first place prize of €6,000 and the knowledge that his multi-coloured design will be showcased in lights worldwide. The 23-year-old Fine Arts student beat off stiff competition from 1,700 other logo designers, including nine runners up whose logos most vibrantly celebrated the EU's 50th anniversary. The top ten reflected the increasing diversity of the EU, with entries from Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Denmark, Spain, Luxembourg and Ireland, among others.

The Commission and all the other EU institutions will use the Mr Skrzypczak's logo for events during 2007 related to the anniversary of the Rome Treaty. Member States, regional and local authorities are also invited to use the logo for their events, which will climax next year on March 25 – the date the Treaty was signed. Organisers wanted a logo to incorporate themes like liberty or democracy, and to this end, Mr Skrzypczak fulfilled the brief, using the word 'Together' – symbolising cooperation between member states. The young designer specialises in graphic design and illustration, and when he's not studying, enjoys sport, music, drawing and sculpture.
